Ray Fitzpatrick's 1995-96 Annual Research Report

Ray Fitzpatrick (Faculty Fellow) continued work with Crispin Jenkinson (Department of Public Health and Primary Care) and neurologists at the Radcliffe Infirmary, assessing the impact of Parkinson’s disease on individuals’ lives. This involves the development of simple, reliable and valid questionnaires that can be used in clinical trials. The instrument we have produced has already resulted in collaborative studies with a wide range of pharmaceutical companies. It is being used in a national study to evaluate Parkinson’s disease nurses, and will be the primary outcome measure for a randomised controlled trial we are conducting of neurosurgery. His research continued with Jill Dawson (Department of Public Health and Primary Care) and orthopaedic surgical colleagues, to design practical measures of outcome for a range of orthopaedic surgical interventions. The instrument we have developed for hip replacement surgery is the primary outcome measure for a national audit of hip replacement surgery, intended to identify the scope for improvement in this extremely common form of surgery. He chaired the MRC’s Health Services and Public Health Research Grants Committee for its first year of existence.
