NATIONAL PATTERNS OF SOCIAL MOBILITY 1970-95: CONVERGENCE OR DIVERGENCE?

CODEBOOK FOR CROSS-NATIONAL DATA SET

The following comprises the codebook for the set of variables on which we agreed at our Florence meeting last December. As we noted then, not everyone will be able to provide all the data. -9 is the general code for missing data but any completely missing variable should be indicated with a column of zeroes.

There are 25 specified variables: country specific variables should be added after these.

Please send the data to me either as an SPSS or a STATA file or as a simple ASCII file. It would be most convenient if you could put your data for different years into a single file and send this to me. But if you prefer to send year- or survey-specific data sets that's fine.

I will also need to know:

Data type (SPSS/ STATA/ ASCII)

Data format

Number of observations

Which variables you have been able or unable to include

Complete information on additional country-specific variables
