John Muellbauer's 1993-94 Annual Research Report

John Muellbauer continued research analysing consumer expenditure, housing markets and productivity growth. He completed (with Ralph Lattimore) a long survey of empirical and theoretical work on consumer expenditure and a shorter more popular account for the Oxford Review of Economic Policy, whose special issue on consumption he edited. He completed a paper with Anthony Murphy on explaining regional patterns of consumer expenditure in the UK and another on explaining regional variations in house prices. This work was part of a large Joseph Rowntree Foundation project on housing and the wider economy. He also completed a paper on the relationship between rents and house prices in the US. He co-authored a paper with Gavin Cameron on R & D and productivity growth in the UK. He presented papers at the Bank of England, at Oxford and at the Royal Economic Society Conference in Exeter.

With David Hendry he was awarded £320,000 for four years of research on 'modelling cointegrated processes'. He continued to serve on the Retail Price Index Advisory Committee.
