John Muellbauer (Official Fellow) worked on a number of problems relevant to current UK policy debates, as well as of more methodological interest. One such problem is the pervasive impact of domestic and international financial liberalization on consumer behaviour responses and on income determination. Another concerns the mortgage arrears and possessions crises in UK housing markets. He completed a paper with David Hendry modelling aggregate time series data arrears and possessions. Regional differences in possessions are quite pronounced and the comparison of aggregate time series with regionally disaggregated time series models was the topic of another paper. He presented a paper at the European Economics Association conference in Prague on explaining regional consumption in the UK.
