Richard Mayou

Emeritus Fellow

Richard Mayou was a Supernumerary Fellow 1976-1987 and Professorial Fellow 1987-2005. He is Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry. He was an undergraduate at St John’s College and qualified in Medicine in 1965. He specialised in Psychiatry returning to the Oxford University Department of Psychiatry in 1973. His research and clinical work was concerned with psychological consequences of major physical illnesses and with “unexplained” medical symptoms. Publications include The Oxford Textbook of Psychiatry and many journal articles. He was founder of the national professional organisation for liaison psychiatry within the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

From 1987-2005 he was a member of numerous Medical Science and senior University committees. He was University Assessor 1999-2000 on behalf of the College. He was Chairman of the College’s Art committee 1992-2017, a Visitor of the Oxford University Botanic Garden for 14 years and Chairman of its Friends for 12 years until 2017.
