D. C. W. Jones, Esq.,
Borough and Waterworks Engineer,
County Borough of Merthyr Tydfil,
Borough Engineer's Department,
Town Hall,
MERTHYR TYDFIL
Dear Sir,
Danger from Coal Slurry being tipped at the rear of Pantglas School, Aberfan
I acknowledge receipt of your letter dated the 12th instant referring to your letter dated the 11th February, 1964, which I passed on to Mr. J. Baker, Group Mechanical Engineer, for his confirmation that the contents were correct.
Unfortunately, since Mr. Baker attended the meeting he has been away for a fortnight, and I have only just received his reply.
Tenders are now being received for the renewal of the culvert which was broken during a recent storm, and the blocked catch Pit has been cleaned out.
Immediately the culvert has been renewed it will be backfilled with material from the adjoining tip, which will then allow further vegetation to grow.
The building up of the wall at the inlet and of the culvert adjoining Rees's Funeral Parlour will be done when the culvert has been renewed.
With regard to disposing of slurries this is, at present, still being disposed of on the tipping site, via the local tramway but it is our intention to discontinue this and dispose of the slurries mixed with Washery Shale at Plymouth Colliery Site until such time as a new tipping site can be found. As you will appreciate, these tailings are very difficult to handle and we are very careful in disposing of this material, so as not to inconvenience any person or persons and, therefore, we would not like to continue beyond the next 6/8 weeks in tipping it on the mountain side where it is likely to be a source of danger to Pantglas School.
Yours faithfully,
(D. L. ROBERTS)
Area Mechanical Engineer
