Introduction to our archives

The Library holds several collections of unpublished papers, many relating to individuals or projects associated with Nuffield College. They include the personal papers of Lord Nuffield (William Morris), G.D.H. Cole and Margaret Cole, and material relating to the Nuffield College Social Reconstruction Survey. Among the other unpublished papers held by the Library are the personal papers of Lord Cherwell (Frederick Lindemann) and a large number of the papers of William Cobbett. Please see the archive collections page for details of the Library's holdings.

During the 1950s, the library of the late G.D.H. Cole was acquired by the College. The greater part of the collection was incorporated into the main stock of the Library, but, in accordance with Cole's wishes, a number of smaller collections have been kept apart. These include the Cobbett collection.

Please note: The papers of the Fabian Society were transferred to the London School of Economics and Political Science in 1995. The papers of Sir Stafford Cripps were transferred to the Weston Library (formerly the "New Bodleian") in 2001. Nuffield Library does, however, retain some Cripps correspondence in the Lord Cherwell collection.
