Inter-Library Loans

We operate an inter-library loan system both for Nuffield College members who wish to borrow items not held elsewhere in Oxford, and for other libraries wishing to borrow items from us. Please make sure you read the information relevant to you.

WHAT DO WE LEND?

Nuffield College Library lends monographs and sends photocopies/scans of articles to UK and international libraries.

Please note that we will not usually lend Theses where the British Library or Bodleian holds a copy.

PRICES

Prices are usually the same as the current British Library charges for UK customers, and 2-4 IFLA vouchers for international requests (borrowing library pays return postage).

REQUESTS

Email us with the information about the item you require.

Please note, we will need your British Library customer code if you are a UK library.

INTER-LIBRARY LOANS FOR NUFFIELD COLLEGE MEMBERS

HOW TO MAKE A REQUEST

  1. Please check SOLO to confirm that the item you want is not held or available electronically.
  2. Email us at library@nuffield.ox.ac.uk with your request.

The College is willing to pay for ten inter-library loans per academic year for each member. Requests over this number must be sanctioned by the Director of Library Services. If you feel you are going to exceed this limit, please email the Director of Library Services to discuss overall provision for your research needs.

Important: Only material which is not held anywhere in the Oxford Library system may be obtained using this service.

ELIGIBILITY

The inter-library loan service is available to current students and Fellows of Nuffield College. This includes students of taught and research programmes; Official, Professorial and Faculty Fellows; Research Fellows; Visiting Fellows; Emeritus Fellows; Associate Members.

WHERE DO ITEMS COME FROM?

If possible, we will get items from the British Library; either a photocopy for single chapters or articles, or a loan for books or journals.

Photocopies are yours to keep, as long as you sign a copyright declaration form. Loans will be with us for between 3 and 15 weeks. If you require them for longer, please email to let us know.

If an item is not held by the British Library, we obtain it from another UK institution.

If an item is not available in the UK, we will consider either buying the item, or getting it from abroad via the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) scheme.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?

Photocopies from the British Library Document Supply Service are usually supplied within 48 hours, and loans within 4 days.

Books in high demand may take much longer if there is a waiting list.

Loans and photocopies from other institutions take 1 - 2 weeks to arrive.

Items from abroad usually take a couple of weeks, but can take months.

CANCELLATIONS

Please be aware that once a request has been processed by the Library, we cannot cancel it. The exception to this is where there is a waiting list, and you feel the item will take too long to arrive.
