José Manuel Aburto
Newton International Fellow, Leverhulme Centre for Demographic Science
José Manuel Aburto is Newton Fellow at the Department of Sociology and the Leverhulme Centre for Demographic Science.
He received his MA in Demography at El Colegio de México, and PhD in Demography at the University of Southern Denmark and Germany’s Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in 2020.
His research focuses on the development of a methodology to understand how populations and individuals survive to higher ages. In his previous work, he has developed new perspectives on life expectancy and lifespan inequality trends in Europe and Latin America. He has also led substantial research documenting the effects of the surge of violence on reversing life expectancy improvements in Latin America.
