Nuffield College seeks to appoint a Director of Library Services to lead a small team of dedicated, professional librarians and to manage the planning and implementation of future development for the College Library and its services. This is an exciting new role with the potential to make significant impact in the future operation of the Library and its role within the College’s research environment. We seek a talented and enthusiastic Library professional who will develop an integrated strategy for the College’s library services with a view to establishing the Nuffield College Library as one of the best social sciences libraries of its kind.
The post-holder’s key responsibilities are: to lead the ongoing strategic evolution of the College Library; to identify opportunities to enhance the College’s library services; to develop excellent connections and collaboration with the Oxford Bodleian Libraries; and to devise and implement a new collection evaluation and management policy and strategies for digital and online collections, a data library service, and the digitization of special collections and archives. The post-holder will oversee the strategic development and effective delivery of academic and research support within the Library; and the preservation of its historic archive collections. She or he will promote the library and its research support service, and will represent the College’s library on internal, University-wide, and external groups and professional bodies.
The ideal candidate will possess significant experience of library management, preferably gained in an academic setting, together with a thorough knowledge of the latest developments in library and information management systems, and an understanding of research support services. She or he will demonstrate the ability to drive positive change, and to provide leadership in responding to the changing role of an academic, social sciences library, and its spaces and services in a digital age. The successful candidate will be committed to improving the user experience and to enhancing existing support for the College’s research community.
Candidates should hold an undergraduate degree (or equivalent competence gained through relevant experience), and a postgraduate qualification in Library or Information Science or a related field. Outstanding written and oral communication skills, excellent IT skills, and strong organizational skills are essential. A higher degree, operational and financial management skills (including human resources), experience of change management, an interest in social sciences, experience of working with archives, and/or an understanding of strategic issues in a University research environment are desirable.
The post is full-time and permanent. Applications to hold the post on a part-time basis or as a secondment will also be considered. The salary will be in the range £45,000-£55,000 p.a. (pro-rated as appropriate). The appointment is subject to the satisfactory completion of a six-month probation period.
