First Nuffield scholarship in Politics completed

We are pleased to share that the David Butler Scholarship in Politics – which will support one student a year at Nuffield College in perpetuity – will be established in 2022, thanks to the generosity of more than 150 donors.

The Scholarship is named in honour of one of the College’s longest-serving Fellows and the ‘father of psephology’ Sir David Butler (pictured right, photograph by Barry Supple). Our donors’ generosity will be matched by the College (1:1) and the University (2:1).

Donors, Fellows, current scholarship recipients and David Butler himself celebrated the new scholarship in person and online at the College’s annual donors’ event on Saturday 18 September. As well as being our first in-person alumni event since the beginning of 2020, the celebration serendipitously fell on the 70th anniversary of David Butler’s admission as a Fellow at Nuffield.

At the event, the Warden recognised the outstanding contribution that David has made to the study of elections and also the personal contribution he has made to College life:

"David has combined creativity and seriousness, erudition and clarity, energy and persistence in ways that have been inspiring over seventy years as a Fellow of Nuffield and a participant in public and academic debate. Throughout that time he has been a wonderful colleague, dedicated to the College and its members. We celebrate with him this remarkable career to date and the chance that the scholarship in his name will give to many others to follow in his footsteps."
