Memories of Tony Atkinson (1944-2017)

LSE shares memories of former Nuffield Warden and distinguished economist, including a new memoir by Judith Atkinson.

A new memoir by Judith Atkinson remembers the personal and professional qualities of Nuffield Warden Tony Atkinson, who died in January 2017, including family photos and anecdotes.

Tony’s work led the way in our contemporary understanding of the economics of inequality and poverty. Memorials were held for him at Nuffield on 17 February 2018 and at LSE on 18 February 2018. His final book, ‘Measuring Poverty Around the World’, was finished by John Micklewright (Research Fellow 1984-86) and Andrea Brandolini and published in June 2019.

The Suntory and Toyota International Centres for Economics and Related Disciplines (STICERD) at LSE made the new memoir available alongside recordings of the memorial event held in Tony’s honour in February 2018 and tributes from Amartya Sen and Peter Diamond.
