Stubbings-Deutsch Graduate Scholarship in Global African History

Nuffield College is delighted to be offering the Stubbings-Deutsch Graduate Scholarship in Global African History with effect from the 2024/25 academic year. This scholarship, will be open to anyone applying for graduate research study (DPhil) in History at the University of Oxford with a specialism in Global African History. “Global” can be understood to refer to the study of any aspect of African history which places it in a global context or which includes the impact of external influences and connections. The Stubbings-Deutsch Graduate Scholarship will cover course fees and living costs (equivalent to the UKRI maintenance grant level) for the duration of the fee liability of the successful applicant’s course of study.

To be considered for this scholarship, candidates must apply for a graduate research course (DPhil) in History in the normal way via the University’s graduate admissions system by the January deadline (5th January 2024). There is no separate scholarship application process or extra supporting documentation required. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence and fit with the subject of the scholarship, as evidenced in the candidates’ graduate application. The selection will be made by representatives of Nuffield College and the Faculty of History. The successful applicant will then be offered a place at Nuffield College (if they have selected or been placed at a different college during their application process, they will be moved to Nuffield College in order to take up the scholarship). It is expected that the holder of the scholarship would be involved in the activities of the Oxford Centre for Global History (for example, attending and assisting with workshops, seminars and lectures).
