A Question of Trust: Understanding Vaccine Hesitancy in the UK

Speaker: James Walsh

University of Oxford

This event is part of the Centre for Experimental Social Sciences Colloquium series, and will take place online.

Abstract

There is considerable demographic heterogeneity in the rate of vaccination within the UK, with non-White ethnic minorities roughly 30 percent less likely than Whites to be vaccinated. This study aims to investigate why a significant minority trust the vaccine as little as they do. It will collect data from people living in the United Kingdom, with both a nationally representative sample and a boosted sample of non-White respondents. It will aim to uncover a series of stylized facts in relation to people’s reasoning about the vaccine. It will investigate whether these reasons differ by race or ethnicity. It will then run a follow-up study to investigate whether an informational intervention can increase individual’s intention to vaccinate.
