The re-birth of fiscal policy: public debt implications

Speaker: Carlo Cottarelli

This event is part of the seminar series entitled 'Expertise and Politics: Lessons from Italy'

The 'Expertise and Politics: Lessons from Italy' seminar series represents an attempt to start a reflection on the role of academics and ‘experts’ in today’s polity. It takes the paradigmatic case of Italy as a case study – Italy being a country where the involvement of academics and experts in civil service and government was followed by an overtly anti-expertise backlash.

Each event runs in two parts: a public lecture where the speakers present some aspects of their research that were impacted by their experience as a civil servant ('What have we learned?') followed by a workshop under Chatham House Rules about the challenges of doing policy-making ('What went wrong?').
