The transition to parenthood is a critical juncture for the reproduction of gender inequalities in the labour market and in the home. By bringing female same-sex couples into the study and comparing how the transition to parenthood influences parents’ division of parental leave in same-sex and opposite-sex couples, we study the importance of physiological factors, the social construction of gender, identity formation and financially rational decision making for divisions of work and care. Focusing on Sweden, this presentation draws on ongoing research on factors predicting who will become a birth mother in a female same-sex couple, a comparison between the division of parental leave in different-sex and female same-sex couples and the income development during the transition to parenthood and the first few years thereafter.
