2025 LGBTQ+ History Month talk
On 13 February, Nuffield College was visited by psychologist, researcher and broadcaster Dr Julia Shaw, who gave the annual LGBTQ+ History Month Talk on some of the issues covered in her book Bi: The Hidden Culture, History and Science of Bisexuality.
In a fascinating and lively presentation, Julia spoke about wide-ranging topics related to bisexuality including its prevalence in the population, historical and current methods of describing and defining bisexual orientation, inclusion and exclusion of bisexuality under the LGBTQ+ umbrella, and whether bisexuality has a visual language.
The audience of Nuffield students and staff continued the conversation and shared their experiences over drinks and afternoon tea, with many attendees keen to read more about the topic.
Luckily the Nuffield Library is as always on the case: Library staff put together an LGBTQ+ History Month display of books from the collection which speak to the themes of Dr Shaw’s book, all of which are available to borrow at Nuffield. Books on the Library list included, as well Dr Shaw’s book, Queer Data: Using gender, sex and sexuality data for action by Kevin Guyan and Coming out: the emergence of LGBT identities in Britain from the nineteenth century to present.
