2026 LGBTQ+ History Month talk
In honour of LGBTQ+ History Month 2026, we were delighted to host a talk from Jack Doyle, trans educator, historian, and community organiser, on Trans Health Histories.
In an enlightening and moving lecture and Q&A, Jack spoke on the invisibilised barriers to trans healthcare in the UK, the history of trans care outside the gender clinic and the challenges facing trans communities and their allies today.
Jack Doyle's historical research and teaching focuses on queerness, race, and warfare in the 19th and 20th century British, French, and American empires. He was previously the University of Oxford’s first named lecturer in LGBTQ history, a co-founder of Oxford Mutual Aid, and the manager of the UK’s first professional trans patients’ advocacy service.
The audience of staff, students and Fellows from Nuffield and the wider community was enormously appreciative of both Jack’s insights and his optimism, and a range of audience questions stimulated further conversation, which continued over drinks and dinner.
We are grateful to Jack for joining us, and to Tarik Abou-Chadi, Nuffield Professorial Fellow, for his expert Chairing of the event.
