Nuffield responds to Science Europe's 'Plan S'

The College gives its official response to the new Open Access proposal from the coalition of research funders across Europe.

In September 2018, Plan S - an initiative for Open Access publishing - was launched, which requires that scientific publications resulting from research funded by public grants must be published in compliant Open Access journals or platforms.

The College’s Governing Body considered Science Europe’s Plan S for full and immediate open access of research publications, and discussed the possible implications of its implementation, as addressed in the commentary by the British Academy published in November 2018. The Governing Body expressed serious concerns about some aspects of Plan S and its implementation and fully endorses the British Academy’s position. The College’s view has been submitted to Science Europe’s online consultation on Plan S. For information, the British Academy’s submission to the Plan S consultation can be found online.
