Mark Carney

Honorary Fellow
Prime Minister of Canada

Mark Carney is the 24th prime minister of Canada, having succeeded Justin Trudeau in March 2025. A highly experienced economist, Mark has had a distinguished career in central banking, finance and international economic policy.

Mark was raised in Edmonton, Alberta, and graduated from Harvard University in 1988 with a degree in Economics. He later earned an MPhil at St Peter’s College, Oxford before coming to Nuffield in 1993 for his DPhil in Economics, under the supervision of Nuffield Fellow Meg Meyer and the late Nobel laureate Jim Mirrlees.

Mark began his career at Goldman Sachs, working across several international offices before joining the Bank of Canada in 2003 as Deputy Governor, then becoming Governor in 2008. His leadership during the global financial crisis is credited with helping Canada avoid the worst impacts, thanks to policies that stabilised the Canadian economy and kept it on a path of recovery faster than other G7 nations.

In 2013, Mark took on the role of Governor of the Bank of England, where he became the first non-Briton to hold the position. He guided the Bank through the aftermath of the financial crisis, the Brexit referendum, and the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. His tenure at the Bank of England was marked by his emphasis on financial stability, forward guidance policies, and efforts to address the UK’s housing market issues. Mark’s economic stewardship during this time cemented his reputation as one of the leading central bankers of his generation.

After stepping down from his central banking roles, Mark continued to influence global finance as chair of Brookfield Asset Management and of Bloomberg LP. He was also appointed the UN Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance, advocating for sustainable investment and climate-related financial reforms. Mark led the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero, launched at COP26, aiming to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Mark moved to Canadian politics in 2024, when he was appointed chair of the Liberal Party’s task force on economic growth. His leadership in the task force and his reputation for tackling complex global challenges led him to run for the leadership of the Liberal Party, a position he won in a landslide. He was sworn in as prime minister on 14 March 2025, and led the Liberal Party to victory in the Canadian election on 28 April 2025.
