Professorial Fellow named President-elect of the Economic History Association

Stephen Broadberry recognised for is contribution to the field of economic history

Nuffield College is delighted to congratulate Professorial Fellow Stephen Broadberry on his appointment as President-elect of the Economic History Association (EHA), in recognition of his distinguished contribution to the field of economic history.

Stephen took up the role at the EHA’s annual conference, held in St Louis from 18 to 20 September, and will serve as President during the 2027–28 academic year.

Reflecting on his appointment, Stephen said:

"At the recent Economic History Association (EHA) conference in St Louis on September 18-20, I was honoured to become President-elect of the EHA, becoming President during the academic year 2027-28. This is the main American academic organisation for economic historians, and the President is normally based in the US, so it is not very often that someone from outside America is appointed.."

The appointment adds to Stephen’s distinguished record of leadership in the field. He previously served as President of the Economic History Society, the leading British organisation for economic historians, from 2016 to 2019, and as President of the European Historical Economics Society, the principal European organisation in the field, from 2011 to 2013.

Stephen’s research focuses on the development of the world economy over the very long run, particularly the historical origins of modern economic growth and differences in living standards across countries.

The Economic History Association promotes research and teaching in economic history, bringing together scholars interested in understanding the economic dimensions of the past.
