The Jean Floud Scholarship

Nuffield's twelfth endowed scholarship

Named in honour of the late Professor Jean Floud, Nuffield's second female Official Fellow, the scholarship celebrates her pioneering contribution to social science and interdisciplinary research. It also reflects Nuffield's long-standing commitment to supporting women in academia and the important role women have played in shaping the College's intellectual life over nearly nine decades.

Launching as part of Nuffield's forthcoming 90th anniversary celebrations, the scholarship will be open to students across all disciplines at the College while recognising and celebrating the contribution of women in the social sciences.

Endowed scholarships are the long-term foundation of Nuffield's student funding model. Unlike spend-down funds, endowment gifts are invested permanently, covering costs for students year after year, generation after generation. By growing this pool of endowed support, we help secure Nuffield's future while ensuring that exceptional students can continue to thrive here.

More on Jean Floud

Jean Floud became Nuffield's second female Official Fellow in 1962. A distinguished educational sociologist, she was a pioneer in the study of educational inequality and social mobility, including research into the biases faced by working-class children in the 11-plus examination and in gaining access to grammar school education.

Beyond her academic work, she played an active role in governance of the University of Oxford, serving on a number of committees, including the Franks Commission of Inquiry, which was responsible for modernising Oxford's institutional structure.

She remained at Nuffield for a decade before taking on the role of Principal for Newnham College, Cambridge. In recognition of her contributions to Nuffield College and her field, Jean was elected an Honorary Fellow in 1983.
