Johnny Neaverson
I am a DPhil candidate in the Department of Politics and International Relations, where my research is jointly funded by Nuffield College and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC).
My DPhil thesis – supervised by Professors David Miller and Zofia Stemplowska – is entitled “The Agents of Justice: Realising Liberal Egalitarianism in Contemporary Liberal Democracies”.
In the thesis, I explore how recent transformations in the governance of liberal democratic states has affected their capacity to realise egalitarian principles of justice, such as the Rawlsian difference principle and substantive equality of opportunity. I argue that realising these principles calls for a diverse agential ecosystem comprised of both state and non-state actors, including charities, think tanks, religious organisations, international institutions, non-governmental organisations, and more.
More broadly, I am interested in theories of distributive justice, the normative evaluation of public policy, and methodological debates in political theory.
Prior to Oxford, I graduated from the University of Cambridge (where my research was generously supported by an MPhil studentship) and the London School of Economics and Political Science, where I was awarded the Head of Department’s Prize for best overall performance in the BSc Politics and Philosophy programme.
Outside of academia, I am an avid sports fan, and a long-suffering supporter of Ipswich Town Football Club.
