I work on democratic institutions and distributive politics in unequal societies. One strand of my research examines when the political inclusion of marginalized citizens translates into substantive representation, and how accountability operates in weakly institutionalized systems characterized by personalized or dynastic politics. Another strand asks how income insecurity shapes identity preferences and demand for social insurance, and why inequality sustains tolerance for democratic exclusion. Prior to the DPhil, I completed an MPhil in Politics (Comparative Government) at Nuffield College. I hold a BA in Economics and Government from Cornell University.
