Nuffield welcomes new Warden
Nuffield College was delighted to welcome Professor Julia Black CBE PBA as its tenth Warden on 16 September 2024. Professor Black comes to us from the London School of Economics, where she was Professor of Law and Strategic Director of Innovation.
Professor Black says: “It is a great honour to take up the Wardenship of such a special institution, and I look forward to helping Nuffield go from strength to strength through the remarkable work taking place within these walls. I would like to thank everyone for the warm welcome I have received, and I will greatly enjoy getting to know each and every one of you as I settle in. I am also very keen to meet the wider Nuffield community, so I hope to see as many Alumni as possible in College and on my travels.”
Professor Black is currently the President of the British Academy, a role she has held since 2021 after six years as a Fellow there. The British Academy is the ‘national voice’ of all social sciences and humanities, supporting researchers and enabling interdisciplinary collaboration on some of the world’s most pressing topics. Professor Black will step down when her four-year term ends in July 2025, passing the baton to Nuffield Alumna Susan Smith.
In addition to her academic work, Professor Black has for many years been in a range of advisory and non-executive roles, including within the Bank of England, the Law Commission, the Financial Services Authority, the UK National Audit Office, and many more. She is also a member of the Council of Science and Technology, advising the government on related policy issues. In recognition of her extensive contributions to academia and government, Professor Black was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2020.
